Where each letter shows up

  • π is the circle constant, about 3.14159.
  • Δ usually means "change in", and θ is the usual name for an angle.
  • Σ is the sum sign in maths, and σ is standard deviation in statistics.
  • λ stands for wavelength, μ for the mean or the micro prefix, and Ω for ohms.

Small differences worth knowing

A few characters look alike but are different. μ is the Greek letter mu, while µ is the micro sign used in units like µm. Δ is the Greek capital delta and ∆ the maths increment sign. In most writing either works, but in code or search, use the one that matches what you are searching for.

Lowercase sigma has two forms: σ in the middle of a word and ς at the end. For maths, also see the currency and sign symbols pages. If you want text that looks Greek but is for fun, the fancy text generator has a faux Greek style.
