Fonts for WhatsApp chats, status and About

WhatsApp has a few text styles built in, and this page covers both. First the built-in ones, which need no tools, then fancy text for everything WhatsApp can't do on its own, like cursive, bubble letters or small caps.

The built-in formatting

Type these around your words and WhatsApp formats them as you send:

  • *bold* with asterisks
  • _italic_ with underscores
  • ~strikethrough~ with tildes
  • ```monospace``` with three backticks on each side

These only work inside WhatsApp, and you have to type the symbols yourself. That is where the generator is useful.

Where fancy text works

  • About line under your name
  • Group names and descriptions
  • Status text
  • Messages in any chat

How to use it

  1. Type your words in the box at the top.
  2. Tap a style to copy it.
  3. Open WhatsApp and paste into the field you want, then send or save.

Because the styles are made of regular characters, the person you send them to sees the same thing, as long as their phone is not very old. If a style shows boxes, try bold or bubble, which have the widest support.

Group names look good with a heart or star, and a quick happy kaomoji adds warmth to a message. For the same idea on other apps, see Facebook fonts.

Questions people ask

How do I make bold text in WhatsApp without a generator?

Put asterisks around the words: *like this*. For italic use underscores _like this_, and for strikethrough use tildes ~like this~. Fancy text is for styles WhatsApp cannot make, like cursive or bubble letters.

Will the person I send fancy text to see it correctly?

Almost always, because the styles are made of regular Unicode characters. On a very old phone a few rare styles may show as boxes. Bold, italic and bubble are the safest.

Can I use fancy text in my About or group name?

Yes. Both accept special characters, though they have length limits, so keep it short.
